ADVFN Free Forex Charts
With that in mind, we decided to take a look at the charting offering from long established financial site ADVFN.
The site offers a whole host of useful services, those of most interest to traders of currencies being the charts, quotes, price alerts, and news.
The live streaming charts use Java, and run right in your browser window. Accessing them is a simple matter of filling in a one page registration form, a 30 second affair, and logging in with the password which is emailed to you immediately. After the first use your password can be remembered, making subsequent access almost instant.
Registration is genuinely free, no credit card details are taken, which is reassuring. Too many so called free sites turn out to be free trials that suddenly turn into paid subscriptions overnight if you forget to cancel before a predefined deadline.
Once logged in, the charts load quickly. Initially you are presented with a basic line chart, but there are plenty enough options to produce any kind of chart you want. All the standard styles are there - line, candle, bar, as well as the more exotic C Bands.
Charts can be drawn for periods from 1 day to 5 years, with intraday timescales ranging between 1 minute and 60 minutes. For the longer range charts the trader can choose between daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly bars.
Those traders who like their indicators are well catered for, with around 80 different studies to choose from. These range from the humble moving average to the fantastically named Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. Up to five studies can be applied at a time. Chart settings can then be saved for later use, which means you can reapply them later on a new chart. If you trade different systems each requiring their particular indicator settings, this is a huge timesaver, and is an option that is mysteriously lacking from most other free forex charts.
In addition to the indicators, ADVFN lets you overlay up to five other symbols on the chart. The ability to superimpose one currency pair over another is incredibly useful, opening up numerous trading system possibilities.
Last but by no means least when it comes to making additions to the charts, are the line drawing tools. As we would expect there are trendlines and horizontals, as well as regression channels, fibs, Gann lines, and even Andrews pitchfork.
All in all, everything you would expect is present, and more besides. The only real downside we noted is that the charts cannot be detatched from the browser window and resized. However, the scale can be changed within the fixed chart size, which makes this much less of a problem than it would otherwise be.
The Forex Angels Say: ADVFN charts are feature rich and easy to use. Resizing might be an issue for some, but with functions that rival some paid-for packages why worry about that? With a price-tag of zero, and a host of other benefits to boot, we think every forex trader should have an account at advfn, even if it's only a backup for their regular pay-service.
